From one quarantine to another: Tulane Medical School has come a long way.

The authorities of the Charleston Port quarantined the island and appointed a young doctor, Thomas Hunt, with Dr. Stone as the first assistant in charge of the situation. The interactions between the two young doctors had brought them into a relationship that lasted the whole of their lives.

They were all on Folly Island for three weeks, and during that time Dr. Stone ignited Hunt’s imagination in epidemic-ridden Louisiana with great medical possibilities. Any student applying to TUSOM will have to fill out a secondary application. If your application is checked by AMCAS, they give us the submission. AMCAS will take a few weeks to validate your application but once your primary application or AMCAS application has been checked, AMCAS will give you an email telling you that your application has been received by Tulane Medical School.

Screening of the candidates

Approximately 600 candidates are invited annually for interviews at New Orleans and the Tulane School of Medicine. Interviews are held until the end of February, from September. • One Faculty member or administrator may interview applicants. All interviews with administrators or staff members are blind and informal. If they want to do so, the interviewer will be able to access the applicant’s personal statement and the secondary submission. 
• The interviewee will also engage in a “standardized patient” exercise in which a first-year medical student interviewing a patient will play the role.
• Applicants also will be interviewed by a current med student at Tulane. The student interview will be taken in the form of a “working lunch.” Both interviewees will write a report about the interview and that report will become part of the applicant’s register. The applicant’s file is deemed complete and ready for review by the Admissions Committee with the inclusion of the interview reports.

Action by the Committee 

The application usually goes before the full Admission Committee of Tulane medical school for review within 3-5 weeks after the interview. The Committee can decide to accept an applicant, position the applicant on a waiting list called “acceptance range” or reject an applicant.

In making this decision, no mathematical formula or lottery format is used and no clear instructions are given to committee members to place particular weight on MCAT, GPA, or other sections of the completed application. 

Accepts are issued weekly, starting on October 1 and continuing until the class is filled. The Committee can elect, each week, to send acceptance offers to applicants from the “acceptance range” list or to send admission offers only to applicants whose files were checked that week.
